Editor, Writer

About

The Post is Ohio University’s independent student-run newspaper publication. It is divided into sections referred to as news, culture, sports, The Beat, opinion, photo, and multimedia. The Post publishes its content in a print edition once a week and on its website daily. I joined as a writer/photographer my freshman year and then worked as a paid editor my sophomore to senior year.

Experience

I initially joined The Post as a news and culture writer, photographer, social media staffer, and copy editor.

  • As a news writer I pitched three story ideas a week and wrote one to three stories. All stories involved interviewing at least three sources, and ranged from event coverage to breaking news to investigative pieces.

  • As a photographer, I shot multiple photo assignments a week for my own stories and other writers’ stories

  • As a social media staffer, I handled posting to our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts once a week. This involved scheduling up to 20 different stories per platform for my assigned day. For Twitter, we used TweetDeck to handle scheduling posts.

  • As a copy editor, I read all content produced during my shift for copy errors, AP style errors, and readability. I also rewrote headlines and web tags for SEO purposes. I took on a paid copy editor role from my junior to senior year, which involved editing all content produced on my assigned day.

  • I was also assigned a day of the week to write The Post’s daily newsletter, Post Haste. This involved writing a short story about a timely topic, followed by selecting three links from The Post’s stories for the day and three articles from national publications. We used Mailchimp to send out the newsletter each morning.

  • My senior year, I also wrote a food review blog (shown below)

I also worked as an administrative assistant my senior year. This included handling daily administrative tasks, running staff meetings, and filling in various roles around the newsroom as needed.

  • One of my biggest responsibilities as administrative assistant was to host freshman staff meetings, helping new members of The Post become more familiar with the organization

  • Also reviewed data from website analytics and coming up with list of key takeaways used to develop and implement policies in the future

Personal Column: Five for Five

  • Five for 5: 1 non-foodie’s journey to find a 5-star meal for $5

For my final semester at Ohio University, I’ve decided to cross off an item on my collegiate bucket list: I’m starting a column. Every other week, I will try an Athens food item that costs less than $5, with the goal of finding a five-star meal.

  • Five for 5: An in-depth review of the iconic Wendy’s 4 for 4

For my first actual review in this “worthless” column series, where I try to find a five-star meal in Athens under $5, I decided to try the Wendy’s 4 for 4, the inspiration behind the name of this column.

  • Five for 5: Fry’d Fries proves keeping it simple isn’t stupid

I wasn’t there when rapper Afroman performed at Fry’d Fries’ grand opening, but I figured the quality of Athens’ newest restaurant would be just the same on a random Monday afternoon.

  • Five for 5: Miller’s Chicken is a treasure away from the main drag

This week, in my journey to find a five-star meal under $5, I decided to look for a meal related to spring break. With my trip to New Orleans right around the corner, I figured it would be a good opportunity to try any New Orleans cuisine that could be found in Athens before I get a chance to try the real thing.
